The Biggest Mistake People Make After a Layoff

The Biggest Mistake People Make After a Layoff

You’ve just been laid off, and your company has offered you outplacement services—but what exactly are they? Outplacement is a service that helps employees transition out of a company successfully. The employer typically pays for it as part of a severance package to support employees in finding new employment. Some companies offer this service, while others do not—it is not guaranteed. Outplacement services can include resume writing, career transition coaching, interview preparation, and job search support.

Surprisingly, many people overlook outplacement services for various reasons—bitterness, feeling confident they can manage on their own, or landing another job quickly. Even if you secure a new job right after being laid off, use the outplacement services. These programs are usually valued at several thousand dollars and can be extremely helpful as you transition into a new company, industry, or stage of life.

Make sure to ask these questions of your previous company or the outplacement coach:

  1. What does my outplacement package include? Get a detailed description of each service. Ask if you can include items that aren’t listed or swap services you may not use for ones you need.
  2. How long can I use the services? Outplacement programs usually have a time limit to work with a career coach.
  3. Can I make edits to my resume after the service expires? A professionally written resume is one of the biggest benefits of outplacement. Make sure you receive a Word copy so you can update it later.
  4. Is a LinkedIn profile update included? If not, ask if it can be added. Many hiring managers review LinkedIn profiles before resumes, so this is very important. You may be able to swap a service you don’t need (like a cover letter) for a LinkedIn update.
  5. How many sessions do I have with a career coach? Career coaches do more than provide job search or interview tips. They can help you feel confident telling your “layoff story,” discuss transitioning to a new industry, provide networking strategies, and assist with offer negotiations. Make sure to use your coaching sessions.
  6. What other services are available? Ask if there are additional resources from the outplacement firm, such as downloadable guides, webinars, or training programs.

The shock of a layoff takes time to settle. Emotions are raw, and you may go through different stages of grief. Many people have the opportunity to use outplacement services but never take full advantage. Our best advice: use everything available to you. These services can make your transition smoother, help you feel more confident, and accelerate your path to your next role.
